Bruneian Cuisine
Abode of Peace
Bruneian cuisine blends Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences with local ingredients. Rich curries, ambuyat (sago starch), and fresh seafood define this small but wealthy nation's food.
A Culinary Portrait
The heritage, flavors, and traditions of Bruneian cuisine
Malay culinary traditions form the core, sharing much with Malaysian and Indonesian cooking. Chinese immigrant communities contributed noodle dishes and stir-frying. Indian influence appears in roti and curry preparations.
As a devoutly Muslim nation, all food in Brunei is halal. The unique national dish ambuyat, made from sago starch, connects Brunei to the indigenous Borneo food traditions predating Malay settlement. Sago starch, belacan (fermented shrimp paste), coconut milk, lemongrass, and sambal (chili paste).
