Papelon con Limon

Panela Lemonade

Prep Time 10 min
Servings 6
Difficulty Easy

An ice-cold refreshment of dissolved panela (unrefined cane sugar) and fresh lime juice — the simplest and most refreshing Venezuelan drink.

Ingredients

  • 250g papelon (panela) block
  • 1L water
  • Juice of 6 limes
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint leaves (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1 Grate or chop the papelon block for faster dissolving.
  2. 2 Dissolve papelon in 2 cups of warm water, stirring until fully melted. Let cool.
  3. 3 Add remaining cold water and fresh lime juice. Stir well.
  4. 4 Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness as desired.
  5. 5 Serve over crushed ice in tall glasses, garnished with mint if desired.

Did You Know?

Venezuelans argue passionately about the ideal ratio of papelon to limon — some like it sweet, others demand it sour, and this preference is apparently a deeply personal matter.
