Herring Under Fur Coat

A stunning layered salad of herring, boiled vegetables, and beets under a thick blanket of mayonnaise, sliced to reveal colorful striations.

Ingredients

  • 400g pickled herring fillets, diced
  • 3 medium potatoes, boiled and grated
  • 3 medium carrots, boiled and grated
  • 3 medium beets, boiled and grated
  • 1 large onion, finely diced
  • 300ml mayonnaise
  • Salt and pepper
  • Fresh dill for garnish

Instructions

  1. 1 Layer diced herring on the bottom of a deep rectangular dish.
  2. 2 Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise. Add grated potatoes as the next layer, press gently.
  3. 3 Add another layer of mayonnaise, then grated carrots. Press and spread mayonnaise again.
  4. 4 Add the finely diced onion layer, then a final thick layer of grated beets.
  5. 5 Cover the top generously with mayonnaise, smooth with a spatula. Refrigerate at least 4 hours.
  6. 6 Garnish with fresh dill before serving. Slice to reveal the colorful layers.
