Mix rice flour with salt and sprinkle water gradually, mixing until it forms a crumbly texture (not a dough).

Layer grated coconut and rice flour alternately inside the puttu maker.

Attach the puttu maker to a vessel of boiling water.

Steam for 5-7 minutes until steam rises through the top.

Push out the puttu and serve with banana, kadala curry, or sugar and coconut.

The Story Behind Puttu
Puttu is an ancient Kerala preparation with roots going back centuries in Malabar cuisine. The traditional bamboo steamer has largely been replaced by metal puttu makers.
