A hearty Karnataka one-pot dish of rice, lentils, vegetables, and a unique spice powder with tamarind tang. The name literally means hot lentil rice in Kannada.

Ingredients

  • rice (1 cup)
  • toor dal (1/2 cup)
  • mixed vegetables (beans, carrots, peas)
  • tamarind paste
  • bisi bele bath powder (special spice blend)
  • jaggery
  • ghee
  • mustard seeds
  • curry leaves
  • cashews
  • dried red chilies
  • asafoetida
  • turmeric
  • salt

Instructions

  1. 1 Cook rice and toor dal separately (or together) until soft.
  2. 2 Cook chopped vegetables with tamarind water and turmeric until tender.
  3. 3 Mix rice, dal, vegetables, bisi bele bath powder, jaggery, and salt. Simmer together.
  4. 4 Prepare tempering: heat ghee, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, dried chilies, cashews, and asafoetida.
  5. 5 Pour tempering over the dish and mix. Serve hot with boondi raita and papad.

Did You Know?

Bisi Bele Bath is served as prasadam (sacred food) at many temples in Karnataka, including the famous Krishna Temple in Udupi.
