This vibrant honey garlic tofu stir-fry embodies the perfect harmony of sweet, sour, and umami flavors that defines authentic Chinese cuisine. The tofu achieves a golden-crispy exterior while maintaining a tender, silky interior, creating a textural contrast that delights the palate. The glossy honey-garlic sauce coats each bite with its rich, caramelized sweetness and subtle pungency from fresh garlic, while the colorful vegetables—crisp bell peppers and tender broccoli—add freshness and visual appeal. Traditionally served as a comforting family dish during Chinese New Year celebrations, this stir-fry represents the balance of yin and yang in Chinese philosophy. The dish is typically enjoyed with steamed jasmine rice, allowing the complex flavors to complement the neutral base. Each bite delivers a symphony of textures and tastes that showcase the sophistication of Chinese cooking techniques, where simplicity meets perfection through careful balance of ingredients and precise timing.

Ingredients

  • 400g extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch for coating
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water for sauce
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds for garnish
  • 2 scallions, sliced

Instructions

  1. 1 Press the tofu between paper towels with a heavy object for at least twenty minutes to remove excess moisture. Cut into two-centimetre cubes and toss with one tablespoon of cornstarch until evenly coated.
  2. 2 Whisk together the honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and the cornstarch-water slurry in a small bowl to make the sauce. Set aside within easy reach of the stove.
  3. 3 Heat one tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes in a single layer and cook without moving for three to four minutes per side until golden and crispy on all faces.
  4. 4 Remove the crispy tofu to a plate. Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the same pan, then stir-fry the broccoli florets and diced red bell pepper over high heat for three minutes until tender-crisp.
  5. 5 Return the tofu to the pan with the vegetables. Pour the honey-garlic sauce over everything and toss continuously for two minutes as the sauce thickens, bubbles, and coats each piece in a glossy glaze.
  6. 6 Drizzle the sesame oil over the stir-fry and give one final toss to distribute. Transfer to a serving plate and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced scallions. Serve immediately over steamed rice.

Did You Know?

The specific ratio of honey to garlic in authentic Chinese honey garlic sauces follows the ancient 'five flavors' theory, where the sweetness of honey (metal element) balances the pungency of garlic (wood element) to create optimal digestive harmony according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles.
