Egyptian Cuisine
Land of the Pharaohs
Egyptian cuisine is one of the world's oldest culinary traditions, shaped by the fertile Nile Delta and millennia of cultural crossroads. Bold spices, hearty legumes, and aromatic herbs create dishes that have nourished civilizations since the time of the pharaohs.
A Culinary Portrait
The heritage, flavors, and traditions of Egyptian cuisine
Ancient Egyptians invented leavened bread and beer, and tomb paintings depict elaborate feasts with roasted fowl, grilled fish, and honey cakes. The Arab conquest of 642 CE introduced spices from the East, while Ottoman rule (1517-1867) brought stuffed vegetables, layered pastries, and coffee culture.
British colonial influence was minimal on the cuisine, but the cosmopolitan port of Alexandria absorbed Greek, Italian, and Levantine flavors. Modern Egyptian food is predominantly a cuisine of the people — hearty, affordable, and deeply satisfying.
