The Story Behind Birchermüesli

Created by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner at his Zurich sanatorium around 1900, Birchermüesli was originally prescribed as a therapeutic food for patients. The doctor was inspired by a similar dish he encountered during an Alpine hike. It became a Swiss household staple and spread globally as the health food movement grew, though the original recipe bears little resemblance to the dry packaged muesli sold today.
