A colossal Cape Town sub roll stuffed with hot chips, masala steak, fried calamari or polony, drenched in sauce β€” a towering street food legend meant to be shared.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sub roll (60cm)
  • 500g beef steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp masala spice
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 500g frozen chips, deep-fried
  • Lettuce, shredded
  • 2 tomatoes, sliced
  • Vinegar (white spirit)
  • Peri-peri sauce
  • Salt and pepper

  3. 3 Split the long sub roll lengthwise without cutting all the way through.
  4. 4 Layer lettuce, then hot chips, then masala steak, then sliced tomatoes.
  5. 5 Drizzle generously with peri-peri sauce and a splash of vinegar.
  6. 6 Wrap tightly in paper, cut into 4 portions, and serve immediately.

Did You Know?

The Gatsby was invented in 1976 by Rashaad Pandy in the Athlone area of Cape Town when he had leftover chips and steak β€” he stuffed them into a long roll and a legend was born.
