Somali Stuffed Potato Balls

Crispy fried potato balls stuffed with seasoned ground beef, a popular Somali street food and appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 6 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 300g ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. 1 Boil potatoes in salted water until very tender, drain well, and mash until completely smooth.
  2. 2 Cook ground beef with onion, garlic, cumin, turmeric, salt, and pepper until browned and dry.
  3. 3 Take a handful of mashed potato, flatten in your palm, place a spoonful of meat filling in the center.
  4. 4 Close the potato around the filling, shaping into a smooth ball, and repeat with remaining ingredients.
  5. 5 Dip each ball in beaten egg, then roll in breadcrumbs until evenly coated.
  6. 6 Deep fry in batches at 175C for four minutes until golden brown, drain on paper towels, and serve hot.
