The Story Behind Mucenici

Mucenici are prepared on March 9 to honor the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste. The figure-eight shape represents the human form, and the 40 pieces traditionally made honor each martyr. In Wallachia they are baked and served in sweet walnut milk, while in Moldova they are boiled in a sweet syrup — two distinct traditions united by faith.
