Bite-sized pieces of fresh fish coated in a spiced flour batter and deep-fried until golden and crunchy. A popular coastal snack that showcases Oman's abundant seafood.

Ingredients

  • 500g firm white fish, cubed
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Lemon wedges

Instructions

  1. 1 Cut fish into bite-sized cubes. Season with salt.
  2. 2 Mix flour with cumin, turmeric, chili, and garlic powder.
  3. 3 Coat fish pieces in the spiced flour mixture, shaking off excess.
  4. 4 Deep fry in hot oil (180C) until golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. 5 Drain on paper towels and serve hot with lemon wedges.

In the fishing port of Mutrah, freshly fried maqliya is sold right at the docks, still sizzling, to fishermen returning from their morning catch.
