The Story Behind Fried Reef Fish
Reef fishing has sustained Nauruans for thousands of years on their tiny coral island. The lagoon and surrounding reef provide a variety of fish species that form the backbone of the diet.
Frying became the preferred cooking method after the introduction of cooking oil and metal pans during the colonial era.
This simple fried fish remains the most common daily meal on Nauru.
