Instructions

Peel ripe breadfruit, remove core, and cut into chunks.

Boil breadfruit until very soft, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and mash until smooth.

Mix mashed breadfruit with coconut cream, sugar, vanilla, and salt.

Soften banana leaves over an open flame until pliable.

Spoon generous portions of the mixture onto banana leaves and wrap into parcels.

Mouj represents the sweet side of Marshallese breadfruit cuisine. Using the ripest, sweetest breadfruit of the season, this pudding was traditionally prepared for first-birthday celebrations (kemem) and other important gatherings. The banana-leaf wrapping technique has been unchanged for centuries.
