A rich, golden butter cake with a tender crumb and caramelized sugar crust, a beloved Lithuanian teatime classic.

Ingredients

  • 250g butter, softened
  • 200g sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 300g all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 100ml milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. 1 Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 min.
  2. 2 Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla.
  3. 3 Sift flour with baking powder and salt. Fold into batter alternating with milk.
  4. 4 Pour into a buttered and floured 9-inch baking pan.
  5. 5 Bake at 180C (350F) for 40-45 min until golden and a skewer comes out clean.
  6. 6 Cool in pan 10 min, then turn out. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Did You Know?

Lithuanian butter cakes are intentionally dense and moist, quite different from the light, airy cakes preferred in Western Europe.
