A layered dessert of sweetened dark rye breadcrumbs, whipped cream, and tangy berry jam, a beloved Lithuanian comfort sweet.

Ingredients

  • 300g dark rye bread, dried and crumbled into fine crumbs
  • 80g butter
  • 60g sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 500ml heavy cream
  • 3 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 200g cranberry or lingonberry jam

Instructions

  1. 1 Toast rye breadcrumbs in butter with sugar and cinnamon over medium heat until crispy and caramelized, about 8 min. Cool completely.
  2. 2 Whip heavy cream with powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  3. 3 Layer in serving glasses: breadcrumbs, whipped cream, jam. Repeat layers.
  4. 4 Finish with a dollop of whipped cream and a spoonful of jam on top.
  5. 5 Refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving to let flavors meld.
