A golden, bubbly bread topped with alpine cheese and sour cream, baked until the cheese melts and edges crisp, a beloved Liechtensteiner snack.

Ingredients

  • 300g bread dough (prepared or store-bought)
  • 200g alpine or Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 100ml sour cream
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp butter for greasing

Instructions

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Roll or stretch bread dough into a flat rectangle about one centimeter thick on a greased baking sheet.
  2. 2 Mix grated cheese with sour cream, diced onion, and caraway seeds. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  3. 3 Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges for the crust to puff.
  4. 4 Let rest for ten minutes in a warm place so the dough rises slightly before baking.
  5. 5 Bake for eighteen minutes until the dough is golden underneath and the cheese topping is bubbly and golden brown at the edges.
  6. 6 Cut into squares and serve immediately while the cheese is still melting and stretchy.
