Herring Under Fur Coat

A striking layered salad of marinated herring, beets, carrots, potatoes, and eggs beneath a vivid magenta sour cream coating.

Ingredients

  • 4 marinated herring fillets, diced
  • 4 medium beets, boiled and grated
  • 3 potatoes, boiled and grated
  • 2 carrots, boiled and grated
  • 3 hard-boiled eggs, grated
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 300g sour cream
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • Salt and white pepper
  • Fresh dill for garnish

Instructions

  1. 1 Spread diced herring as the bottom layer in a rectangular dish. Top with finely diced onion.
  2. 2 Layer grated potatoes over the herring, pressing gently. Spread a thin layer of sour cream mixed with mayonnaise.
  3. 3 Add a layer of grated carrots, then another thin sour cream layer.
  4. 4 Add grated eggs, then sour cream.
  5. 5 Top with grated beets, forming the final layer. Spread remaining sour cream mixture to coat completely.
  6. 6 Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight. Garnish with dill before serving.
