Did You Know?
Kazakhs traditionally make exactly seven shelpek on Fridays, one for each layer of heaven, and share them with neighbors as a spiritual offering.
The Story Behind Shelpek
Shelpek holds deep spiritual significance in Kazakh Muslim tradition. Seven flatbreads are fried every Friday and distributed to neighbors and passersby as a form of sadaqa (charity) and remembrance of the deceased. The tradition blends pre-Islamic Turkic beliefs about the sacredness of bread with Islamic practice. Beyond ritual, shelpek is beloved everyday bread, perfect for scooping up stews and dipping in tea.
