The seven ingredients in Nauryz kozhe symbolize seven virtues: joy, luck, wisdom, health, wealth, speed, and growth — one for each day of the Nauryz celebration.
The Story Behind Nauryz Kozhe
Nauryz kozhe is inseparable from the Nauryz celebration, the Turkic and Persian new year marking the spring equinox on March 22. The soup must contain seven ingredients, a number sacred across Central Asian traditions. Each household prepares it to share with neighbors and visitors during the week-long festivities. The dish was suppressed during the Soviet era but was revived with independence, becoming a powerful symbol of Kazakh cultural identity.
