A refreshing chilled drink made from ground jicaro seeds, rice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla, sweetened with sugar. Creamy, spiced, and uniquely Honduran.
Ingredients
1 cup jicaro seeds (or substitute sesame seeds and peanuts)
1/2 cup white rice, soaked
2 cinnamon sticks
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup sugar
6 cups water
Ice for serving
Instructions
1Toast jicaro seeds lightly in a dry pan until fragrant, about three minutes. Let cool.
2Soak rice and toasted seeds in two cups of water for at least four hours or overnight.
3Blend soaked mixture with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and remaining water until very smooth.
4Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, pressing to extract all the liquid. Discard solids.
5Stir in sugar until dissolved. Chill thoroughly and serve over ice.
Did You Know?
Honduran horchata is completely different from Mexican horchata. The Honduran version uses jicaro seeds from the morro tree, giving it a unique nutty flavor found nowhere else.
