Ghanaian Meat Pie

A flaky, golden pastry shell filled with well-seasoned minced beef, potatoes, and onions — Ghana's favourite bakery snack for any time of day.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 150g cold butter, cubed
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 4-6 tbsp ice water
  • 300g minced beef
  • 2 potatoes, diced small
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 bouillon cube
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 egg for wash

Instructions

  1. 1 Rub butter into flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add egg yolk and water to form dough. Chill 30 minutes.
  2. 2 Sauté onion, brown mince, add potatoes, carrot, curry, thyme, bouillon, and water. Cook until tender. Cool.
  3. 3 Roll out pastry, cut circles. Place filling on half, fold and seal with a fork.
  4. 4 Brush with beaten egg. Bake at 180C for 25-30 minutes until golden.
  5. 5 Cool slightly and serve.
