Cardamom Bread

A golden braided Finnish sweet bread perfumed with cardamom, brushed with egg wash and topped with pearl sugar.

Ingredients

  • 500g all-purpose flour
  • 100g sugar
  • 1.5 tsp ground cardamom
  • 7g instant yeast
  • 250ml warm milk
  • 80g butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Egg wash and pearl sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. 1 Mix flour, sugar, cardamom, yeast, and salt. Add warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Knead 10 min until smooth.
  2. 2 Cover and let rise 1 hour in a warm place until doubled.
  3. 3 Divide dough into 3 equal pieces. Roll each into a long rope. Braid the three ropes together.
  4. 4 Place braid on a baking sheet. Cover and let rise 30 min.
  5. 5 Brush with egg wash and sprinkle generously with pearl sugar.
  6. 6 Bake at 200°C for 20-25 min until deep golden. Cool on a rack.
