A large, tender beef meatball braised in rich brown gravy — a Dutch grandma classic served with potatoes and vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 50g breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely grated
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 400ml beef broth
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • Splash of vinegar

Instructions

  1. 1 Mix ground beef with egg, breadcrumbs, grated onion, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 large balls.
  2. 2 Brown meatballs in butter on all sides in a hot skillet. Remove.
  3. 3 Add flour to the pan drippings, stir 2 min to make a roux.
  4. 4 Gradually whisk in beef broth. Add soy sauce and a splash of vinegar. Bring to a simmer.
  5. 5 Return meatballs to the gravy. Cover and braise on low heat for 25 min, turning once.
  6. 6 Serve with the gravy spooned over boiled potatoes and steamed vegetables.
