A beloved Dominican beverage made by combining fresh orange juice with chilled evaporated milk and sugar, creating a creamy, citrusy, refreshing drink.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice, very cold
  • 1 cup evaporated milk, very cold
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup crushed ice

Instructions

  1. 1 Squeeze oranges and strain juice to remove all pulp. Chill in the freezer for fifteen minutes until very cold.
  2. 2 Pour evaporated milk into a pitcher. Add sugar and vanilla extract, stirring until sugar dissolves completely.
  3. 3 Very slowly pour the ice-cold orange juice into the milk mixture while stirring constantly. This prevents curdling.
  4. 4 Add crushed ice and stir gently to combine. The key is keeping everything extremely cold to prevent separation.
  5. 5 Pour immediately into tall glasses. The drink should be smooth, creamy, and bright orange in color.
  6. 6 Serve right away with a straw. If it begins to separate, give it a quick stir before drinking.
