A simple, beloved Dalmatian side dish of Swiss chard and boiled potatoes mashed together with generous amounts of garlic and olive oil. Pure comfort in its most elemental form.

Ingredients

  • 500g Swiss chard, washed and chopped
  • 400g potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 cloves garlic, sliced
  • 4 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1 Boil potatoes in salted water until nearly tender, about 12 minutes.
  2. 2 Add chopped chard to the pot with the potatoes. Cook together for another 5-7 minutes until both are soft.
  3. 3 Drain well, reserving a splash of cooking water.
  4. 4 Return to the pot. Add garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Mash roughly — the texture should be chunky, not smooth.
  5. 5 Add a squeeze of lemon if desired. Drizzle with more olive oil before serving.

Did You Know?

In Dalmatia, blitva is considered such an essential side dish that ordering grilled fish without it is almost considered an insult to the kitchen.
