Bauru Sandwich
An iconic Brazilian hot sandwich from São Paulo made with roast beef, melted mozzarella cheese, tomato, and pickles in a crispy French bread roll.

Slice each French bread roll lengthwise, scoop out a small amount of the soft interior to create a trough for the fillings, and butter the inside surfaces.

Layer the thinly sliced roast beef generously inside each roll, folding the slices to create height and texture, then season lightly with salt and pepper.

Place the tomato slices and pickle slices on top of the beef, then lay two slices of mozzarella cheese over everything in each sandwich.

Place the open sandwiches under a broiler or in a hot oven at 400°F (200°C) for 3 to 5 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly and the bread is toasted.

Close the sandwiches, press down gently, and serve immediately while the cheese is still stretchy and melted.

The Bauru sandwich was invented in 1934 at the Ponto Chic bar in São Paulo by a student from the city of Bauru who asked for a custom sandwich, and it became so popular it was added to the permanent menu.
