Deep-Fried Conch Batter Balls

Crispy golden fritters loaded with tender conch meat, peppers, and onions. The quintessential Bahamian appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 450g conch meat, finely diced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 1 celery stalk, finely diced
  • 1 Scotch bonnet pepper, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Vegetable oil for deep frying

Instructions

  1. 1 Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  2. 2 Add beaten egg and milk. Stir to form a thick batter.
  3. 3 Fold in diced conch, onion, bell pepper, celery, and Scotch bonnet.
  4. 4 Heat oil to 180C in a deep pot.
  5. 5 Drop batter by tablespoons into the hot oil, frying in batches.
  6. 6 Fry 3-4 minutes, turning once, until deep golden brown.
  7. 7 Drain on paper towels. Serve hot with dipping sauce.
