A beloved Southern dessert featuring sweet, juicy peaches baked under a golden, buttery biscuit topping that is crispy on the outside and tender within.

Ingredients

6 cups fresh or canned peaches, sliced
1 cup granulated sugar, divided
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

1 Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and pour the melted butter into a 9x13-inch baking dish, tilting to coat the bottom evenly.
2 Toss the sliced peaches with half the sugar and the cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl, letting them macerate while you prepare the batter.
3 In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining sugar, baking powder, salt, and milk until you have a smooth, pourable batter with no lumps.
4 Pour the batter directly over the melted butter in the baking dish without stirring, then spoon the seasoned peaches and their juices evenly over the top of the batter.
5 Bake for 45 to 55 minutes until the topping has risen up around the fruit, turned golden brown, and the center is set and no longer jiggly.
